Face Study – Oils

I think artist should always try evolve and experiment with different mediums. So with this in mind I recently bought some oil paints. I have painted once with oils, years ago. A mediocre eagle. So in the spirit of getting better, I have wathced vidoes on Youtube!

What I first notices about oils is how tacky a medium it is. But what I really like is the way you can use as light wash to block out colour areas and dark areas and then you progress to thicker layers. What makes it different from acrylics as that you can works back into colours at a later stage and blur them together as there are long drying times.

For this image ‘Face Study’  I decided to paint without drawing first in pencil. This I have never done before ( ominous drum droll in background).  This enabled me to ‘feel’ more expressive with the subject. A lesson for using oils (any image making for that matter) is keep on working the image until you get what you want. Oils enable re-working unlike acrylic, gouache and Watercolours.

I’m an utter novice when it comes to painting so feel free to leave comments and advice.
